‘Bowls of peaches ripen in the conservatory, next to where the cats like to sleep, too hot at high noon, just right by late afternoon. Instead of a greenhouse, I let tomatoes grow here, the late Summer sun ripens them eventually. When it gets too hot, I retreat into the shade of the house, grateful that searing temperatures have not yet scolded these parts of England.’
‘The days are getting shorter now, high days and holidays are over, and I am grateful to have routines back again. I am ready for the leaves to turn and the geese to fly. And as the sunset pours over the windowsill, it makes everything glow.’
